Anthropic just merged Claude Cowork and Claude Chat into a single tool. If you use Claude for any real work, this is the update worth knowing about.

What Cowork was

Cowork was Claude's separate mode for bigger work tasks. Research, reports, spreadsheets, file organization, the jobs that take an hour instead of a sentence. The catch was that you had to decide which mode you wanted before you even started typing, which meant guessing how big the job was before you had thought it through.

What changed

That choice is gone. You type whatever you need into one box, and Claude works out on its own whether it is a quick answer for regular chat or a two-hour task for Cowork.

Small change on the surface, big change in practice. You stop managing the tool and just describe the work.

Why it actually matters

What this unlocks is the ability to hand Claude a job and leave it alone entirely. You can tell it to pull last week's numbers and write the weekly report the way you always write it, and it will go do the whole thing autonomously.

And you can check progress from your phone, from anywhere. Start something at your desk, close the laptop, look at it again from the car. The work keeps going.

Docs and Slides, built in

My favourite part of the update. When you ask for that report, you now get an actual document that you and Claude can edit together right inside the conversation, instead of a wall of chat text you have to copy somewhere else.

And you can follow it with "turn this into a deck" and it will build the slides in the same conversation. The gap between the AI finishing and you having something you can actually send just closed.

How to use it well

  • Stop writing small prompts. The system is now built for jobs, not questions. Describe the finished thing you want.
  • Give it your format. "The way you always write it" only works if it has seen how you write it. Paste in last month's report once.
  • Use scheduled tasks. A weekly report that writes itself on Monday morning is the whole point.
  • Check it from your phone. Long tasks are only useful if you are not sitting there watching them.
The tools are quietly moving from "answer my question" to "do my job." Cowork disappearing into Claude is what that looks like in practice.

Give it one real job you would normally block out an afternoon for, then close the laptop and check it from your phone.
