I just posted a video on using Claude for legal work, and a bunch of you asked for the longer version. Here it is. If you touch contracts at all, this is the corner of AI that quietly saves you the most time, and almost nobody sets it up properly.

Quick context. Anthropic rolled out Claude for Legal in May 2026. It isn't a chatbot guessing at the law. It's a set of focused agents that plug into the tools legal teams already live in, and the one most people start with is the contract review agent.

What Claude for Legal actually is

Strip away the marketing and it's two things. A pack of practice-area plugins covering contracts, NDAs, diligence, compliance, and a few more. And a set of connectors that let Claude reach into the systems where your documents actually live, like DocuSign, Box, iManage, Everlaw, and the big research platforms. So instead of copy-pasting clauses into a chat window, the work happens where you already work.

The contract review agent (the one from the video)

This is the workhorse. You hand it a contract and it reads the whole thing clause by clause against your playbook, not some generic template. Then it gives you three things:

  • A simple flag on every clause. Green if it's fine, yellow if it needs a look, red if it's a problem.
  • Plain redline suggestions you can actually paste in.
  • A summary of the key commercial terms up top, so you get the gist in about thirty seconds.

The part that matters is that it reviews against your positions. If your standard is "we never accept unlimited liability," it flags the moment a contract tries to slip that in. That's the whole difference between a toy and a tool.

It does the first read so you spend your time on judgment, not on hunting for the one bad clause buried on page nine.

It's not just contracts

The contract reviewer gets the spotlight, but there's a handful of other agents worth knowing about:

  • NDA triage. Drop in an NDA and it tells you what's standard, what's off-market, and what to push back on. Perfect for the ones that pile up in your inbox.
  • Compliance checks. Run a document or a process against a set of rules and get the gaps flagged for you.
  • Risk assessment. A structured read on where the real exposure sits in a deal or a document.
  • Vendor and counterparty checks. A quick red-flag pass before you put your name on anything.
  • Signature requests. Push the final version straight to DocuSign without breaking your flow.

You don't need all of them. Most people get the bulk of the value from contract review and NDA triage alone, so start there.

How to set it up

This is the step people skip, and it's the whole game. Generic setup gives you generic output. Here's the order that actually works:

  1. Install the legal plugin. Add it to Claude so the agents are available. One install gets you the set.
  2. Do the setup interview. It takes about five minutes. You point the tool at your own playbook: your standard positions, your dealbreakers, your preferred language. This is what makes the output sound like your firm instead of a textbook.
  3. Connect your tools. Hook up the connectors you actually use, like DocuSign and Box, so Claude works where your documents already live.
  4. Run a real one. Feed it an actual contract you know cold and check its flags against your own read. You'll calibrate how much to trust it within a document or two.

The one rule: you sign off, not the AI

This part is not optional. The agent does the first pass. A human owns the final call. Never route AI output straight to a client or the other side without a person reviewing it first. Used that way, it's a genuine force multiplier. Skipped, it's a liability waiting to happen. Build the human checkpoint in from day one and you get the speed without the downside.

Why it's worth your time

If you're a solo lawyer or a small team, this is leverage you couldn't really buy before. The boring 80 percent of review gets faster, and your hours go to the calls that actually need a brain. If you're in-house, it's how you finally clear the contract backlog without adding headcount.

Start with contract review, point it at your playbook, keep a human in the loop. That's the whole thing.
