xAI just launched GrokBot, and the simplest way to think about it is a platform where you spin up your own AI coworkers and then let them work entirely on their own.

The difference from a chatbot

Instead of telling you how to do something, these bots log into your actual apps and do it themselves, clicking through the interface the way a person would. No integration to configure, no API to wire up. If you can do it in a browser, the bot can attempt it.

Each bot gets its own computer

This is the piece that makes it more than a novelty. Every bot runs on its own machine in the cloud, so you can close your laptop and walk away and the work keeps going. That is the difference between a tool you operate and an employee you delegate to.

They can spend your money

This is where it gets genuinely new. You can connect a card, and a bot can buy what it needs online. Every purchase still requires your approval, which is the right design, but an AI that can go out and transact on its own is a real threshold to cross.

Treat that feature with more care than the rest. Approval prompts only protect you if you actually read them.

The marketplace is the interesting part

You do not have to build any of these yourself. There is a marketplace where you download other people's bots, complete with their skills, memory, and routines.

That is the shift worth noticing. Not that you can build an AI worker, but that someone else already built one and you can just take it.

How to start without making a mess

  • Pick one job you already do well. You cannot supervise a bot doing something you have never done.
  • Give it read-only access first. Let it draft and report before it acts.
  • Turn on spending last. Get comfortable with its judgment before you attach a card.
  • Check the marketplace before you build. Someone has probably shipped a version of what you want.
We are moving toward a world where you do not hire for some roles, you download them. That is a strange sentence to write, and it is close enough now to plan around.

Start with one bot doing one job you already understand end to end. That is how you learn where the guardrails need to be.
