Meta just released Muse, a personal AI assistant that does the task rather than telling you how to do it. Think ChatGPT or Siri, except it goes and handles the whole thing on its own.

What that looks like

You could ask Muse to go through your email. It will not just read and summarise. It digs through the inbox, finds the school supply list you forgot about, asks whether you want everything ordered, and then goes and buys it.

Because it logs into your actual accounts, it already has your context. It can book a flight for you on command without you assembling the details first.

Every Muse gets its own computer

This is the design choice that makes it different from every assistant before it. Meta spins up a private machine in the cloud for your assistant, so when you close the app it is still in there working. The task does not pause because you put your phone down.

The password question

Handing Meta your logins sounds like a terrible idea, and that reaction is correct. Their answer is that Muse never actually gets your passwords. It gets permission to use them without ever knowing what they are.

There is also a second AI called Sentinel watching over your Muse. It checks everything Muse sends out to the internet, and if Muse tries something sensitive, like spending money, Sentinel stops and asks you first.

My honest take: the architecture is thoughtful and the risk is still real. An assistant with standing access to your accounts is a new category of thing to trust, and "an AI supervises the AI" is a reasonable answer rather than a complete one. Start it on low-stakes errands.

What to try first

  • Something with a clear finish line. Order the thing, book the thing, find the document. Not open-ended research.
  • Nothing financial on day one. Learn its judgment before it touches a card.
  • Read what Sentinel flags. Those prompts are the whole safety model. Skimming them defeats the point.
The assistant era spent ten years answering questions. This is the first wave that actually finishes errands, and that is a much bigger deal than another chat window.

Give it one errand you have been avoiding and watch how it handles the parts you did not specify.
